Answer · The card

What should I write on the flower card?

The flowers are the gesture. The card is the message. Most people spend an hour choosing the arrangement and thirty seconds on the card - which is precisely backwards, because the card is the part that gets kept.

Short answer

Short, specific, and in your own words. Two or three lines is plenty. Name the person, name the thing, and stop. What kills a card is generic phrasing - "thinking of you at this difficult time" says nothing that a stranger could not have written.

Three rules

1. Be shortThree lines is enough. If you need a page, send a letter instead.
2. Be specific"Thank you for Tuesday" beats "thank you for everything". Detail is what proves you meant it.
3. Do not qualifyThe word "but" cancels every word that preceded it. This is fatal in an apology and unhelpful everywhere else.

Examples by occasion

Apology"I was wrong. I'm sorry." · "No excuses. I'm sorry, and I'll do better." · "I'm sorry. I'd rather say it in person - tell me when."
Anniversary"Same choice, every year." · "Not a habit. A decision." · "Still the best thing I ever did."
Birthday"Another year of you. Good." · "Sorry I can't be there - celebrate for both of us."
Condolences"With our deepest sympathy." · "There are no words. We are here." · Name the person who died.
Thank you"Thank you - for more than you know." · "You didn't have to. That's the point."
No occasion"No occasion. Just you." · "Thinking of you." · Often the most effective card of all.
